Visual Art at Lavers Hill is run according to the newly released Australian Curriculum. Two main areas are covered: Creating Art and Responding to Art.
In the “Creating Art” strand of the curriculum students are given the opportunity to become familiar with many techniques and to experiment with a variety of new materials.
In the “Responding to Art” strand, students are encouraged to build an “arts vocabulary” so that they can confidently talk about their own art work and the artwork of others. They learn to look at and recognise art from other cultures. They become familiar with the traditional art elements and both traditional and modern techniques.
Our small class sizes and excellent facilities enable art lessons to be linked to other areas of the curriculum e.g. student led inquiry learning, and there is ample opportunity for students to personally explore their own areas of current interest.
In order to mitigate the logistics of visiting city galleries, we organise visiting artists and incursions. Video link ups with the National Gallery are planned in the near future.
We also intend to introduce a class set of iPads so digitally produced art can be covered in more depth.
